This edition of Band of the Week is dedicated to a single artist rather than a band. Sorry to be misleading if you were expecting a band (like usual), but Childish Gambino deserves his props.
Childish Gambino, or Donald Glover as he is known by when not rapping, may be recognized from the popular internet comedy group known as “Derrick Comedy.” The group made several hilarious and unique comedic videos which can be seen by clicking on that link. Childish Gambino is also a writer (notably for 30 Rock), an actor (“Troy” on Community), and best of all a rapper.
Childish Gambino, to me, is not a prototypical rapper. Sure he does rap about sex, drugs, relationship problems, sometimes violent acts (typically when explaining how he had defend himself growing up; violence isn’t the answer, though, kids!), but what he does best is incorporating popular culture that “nerds” and “geeks” and “dorks” can relate to and understand. My favorite line from his song “Lights Turned On” is when he references the Pokémon Raichu. The lyrics go “Let me poke ya ma [sounds like Pokémon!], Raichu.”
His songs aren’t for the faint of heart because he does swear consistently (which isn’t a problem for me because swearing isn’t a big deal), makes references to all sorts of “interesting” uncouth behavior (which again is a subjective way to look at it for some), and his songs are LOUD (which I personally love).
He makes excellent pop culture references, is a self-proclaimed “blerd” (black nerd), raps clearly (I hate it when rappers, and singers in general, mumble just to rap/sing quicker), and his tracks are just amazing. Check out Childish Gambino.
