Band of the Week: Bon Iver

Bon Iver is a very interesting folk rock band.

They are essentially just one man, Justin Vernon (he writes all the songs), but when touring comes along Bon Iver turns into a real band with several members at a time, with a few rotating positions to fill voids.  The musicians that have played (and some still are) with Vernon in Bon Iver are: Sean Carey, C.J. Camerieri, Greg Leisz, Michael Lewis, Matthew McCaughan, Rob Moose, Michael Noyce, Reginald Pace, and Colin Stetson.  The group won two Grammy Awards in 2012 for “Best New Artist” and “Best Alternative Music Album.”

Vernon’s acceptance speech was very odd though.  Take a look.

What I love most about Bon Iver and the songs they play is how much emotion can be felt from each song, even when no singing is being done.  The music itself is just very powerful and moving to me.  My favorite songs are Blood Bank, Skinny Lover, and Lump Sum.

Sadly the band is on hiatus, but their record label has assured everyone that the band is still together, just on a break.
