‘Twerk’ Added To Dictionary, Among Others

Yeah.  You read that correctly.

The word ‘twerk’ has been added to the dictionary – you can thank Miley Cyrus for that.  After her, um, sexually-charged? performance seen round the world at the Video Music Awards, ‘twerk’ went around the world as well.  Though the word ‘twerk’ can be heard in older rap and hip-hop music, twerking has only recently gained mainstream fame, or possibly infamy depending on how you look at it. I’d post her video, but I don’t want to disgust any of my readers by the sight of it.

Along with Twerk, such words as ‘bitcoin’, ‘derp’, ‘geek chic’, ‘girl crush’, ‘selfie’, and ‘TL;DR’ were added as well.  Man, George Orwell was right and wrong at the same time.  It’s not necessarily Newspeak, but ‘morespeak’ that we’re getting here in the 21st century. I’m glad that the Oxford Dictionary is evolving as we humans change, corrode, and make the English language our own.  It’s quite the interesting time to be alive.

There were plenty more words added as well.

  1. I felt her performance was sad and irresponsible considering how many your girls look at her as a role model. She had no problem being a role model when it brought her fame. Like they say in the Spiderman comics, with great power comes great responsibility.

    • It was very irresponsible, and she may go down as one of the many child stars that can’t make it in adulthood because of alcohol or drug issues. It’s very sad and it’s clear no one is helping her either.
