Yeah. You read that correctly.
The word ‘twerk’ has been added to the dictionary – you can thank Miley Cyrus for that. After her, um, sexually-charged? performance seen round the world at the Video Music Awards, ‘twerk’ went around the world as well. Though the word ‘twerk’ can be heard in older rap and hip-hop music, twerking has only recently gained mainstream fame, or possibly infamy depending on how you look at it. I’d post her video, but I don’t want to disgust any of my readers by the sight of it.
Along with Twerk, such words as ‘bitcoin’, ‘derp’, ‘geek chic’, ‘girl crush’, ‘selfie’, and ‘TL;DR’ were added as well. Man, George Orwell was right and wrong at the same time. It’s not necessarily Newspeak, but ‘morespeak’ that we’re getting here in the 21st century. I’m glad that the Oxford Dictionary is evolving as we humans change, corrode, and make the English language our own. It’s quite the interesting time to be alive.
