Band Of The Week: Arctic Monkeys

Here are the previous ‘Band of the Week’ recipients.

In honor of the official release of their new album AM being today (in America; though it was streamed online earlier), the Band of the Week is the Arctic Monkeys!

The indie rock band from Sheffield, England has been around since 2002, and had great early success throughout the world because of the Internet (fan sites, not marketing from the band). The band consists of four members: Alex Turner (lead vocals/lead guitarist), Jamie Cook (rhythm/lead guitarist), Nick O’Malley (bass guitar, backing vocals), and Matt Helders (drums, vocals). There was a fifth member of the group, Andy Nicholson (bass guitar, vocals), but he left shortly after their debut album, Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not, in 2006.

Their aforementioned debut album set the record for fast selling album in UK chart history with 363,735 copies sold in the first week. That’s incredible considering the UK’s track record of amazing bands. The Arctic Monkeys also tied The Strokes and Oasis at the NME Awards by winning three fan-voted awards: Best British Band, Best New Band, and Best Track.

Shortly after the awards, the Arctic Monkeys released one of my favorite songs, and EPs, dubbed Who The Fuck Are The Arctic Monkeys? Unbeknownst to me, until today, that the EP was not eligible for the charts because of it’s length (or lack thereof). But who really cares about the charts, honestly?

Including their debut album, and EP shortly after, the Arctic Monkeys have 90 songs to their name, and four other albums (including the new AM album).  That’s a pretty terrific amount of songs and albums for a band that is been around for a little over a decade, and only released their first album seven years ago.

I am currently in the process of downloading the album on iTunes! I’m sure it’ll be great, but their EP still is my favorite. (I had a few iTunes cards from last Christmas I had to use!)
