After a two-week hiatus, ‘Pokémon of the Week’ is back! Hooray!
This week’s winner is none other than Meowth!
Meowth is a Normal type Pokémon, and evolves into Persian at level 28. Meowth is weak only to Fighting types, immune to Ghost types, and damaged regularly by all other types. The bane of being a Normal type is that Normal types are not super-effective against any type, and Ghost type is also immune to Normal type. Per Smogon, Meowth is not used very often competitively in Little Cup (the tier used by ‘first stage’ Pokémon). Nonetheless, we don’t love Meowth because of it’s (lack of) competitive ability.
Here is a brief summation of Meowth from Bulbapedia:
Meowth is a small, feline Pokémon with cream-colored fur that turns brown at the tips of its hind paws and tail. Its ovoid head features four prominent whiskers, wide eyes with slit pupils, and a gold oval coin embedded in its forehead. Its ears are black with brown interiors, and are flanked with an additional pair of long whiskers. Meowth is a quadruped with the ability to walk on its hind legs; while the games always depict Meowth on two legs, the anime states that Meowth normally walks on all fours. It can freely manipulate its claws, retracting them when it wants to move silently. The tip of its tail curls tightly.
That’s the relative summation of all other Meowth, including the Team Rocket Meowth from the anime below:
This Meowth is different than any other Meowth in (known) Pokémon existence! Why? Because it can talk! (What Pokémon fan didn’t know that, though?) Here is the anime Meowth’s back story from Bulbapedia (it’s rather heartbreaking):
Meowth’s earliest memory is being alone at Camp Pokéhearst. With no food, he was always starving, and tipped over a basket of baseballs believing it was food. As punishment for tipping the basket over, the baseball coach hung him from a tree; from this tree, he was able to see a movie called That Darn Meowth!, which depicted a Meowth in Hollywood being given delicious food by its family. Meowth instantly decided to go to Hollywood, which he believed would be a paradise.
However, when he arrived in Hollywood, he was merely a stray Pokémon, and was constantly being chased for stealing food. Soon, a Meowth gang, led by a Persian, took him in. Meowth lived on the streets as a member of the gang for a long time; the gang annoyed the humans in town, stealing food and causing trouble in general. One day, Meowth came across a female Meowth named Meowzie. She rejected him, saying that he was poor and that she preferred humans, so Meowth attempted to make himself more human-like to make her love him. Thus, he painstakingly taught himself to speak human language and walk upright like a human. When he approached her after this transformation, she once again rejected him, calling him a freak. Heartbroken, Meowth remembered the first human word he learned to speak—”rocket”—and was inspired to join Team Rocket.
Though Team Rocket’s Meowth has evil intentions, I have always had a soft spot for him because of his rather depressing backstory. What’s your opinion on this particular Meowth?
As with every Pokémon of the week, I am including artwork from an artist on deviantArt! This week’s artist is Iza-nagi (check out their page!) and as usual all artwork and credit belongs to them!
